Imphal East DC orders immediate removal of unauthorized structures along riverbanks and drains

In a move aimed at mitigating flood risks during the ongoing monsoon season, the Deputy Commissioner of Imphal East District has issued a stern directive for the immediate removal of unauthorized structures along riverbanks and drainage systems within the district’s jurisdiction.
According to a notice (No. DC(IE)/9/4/97 Pt-II) issued from the office of the Deputy Commissioner, a number of unauthorized constructions—both temporary and permanent—have encroached upon critical drainage and riverbank areas, obstructing the natural flow of water and significantly increasing the risk of flooding.
Despite multiple eviction and removal drives by government and district authorities in the past, such encroachments continue to persist.
Deputy Commissioner Dr. Nivedita Lairenlakpam, who signed the notice, emphasized that the situation poses a serious hazard during the rainy season. The notice clearly directs individuals and entities responsible for such encroachments to dismantle and remove the structures immediately, and no later than seven days from the issuance of the notice dated June 23.
The district administration has warned that failure to comply within the stipulated timeframe will result in forcible eviction and demolition by the concerned line departments without any further notice.
The general public, particularly those who have erected such unauthorized structures, have been urged to extend their cooperation. The DC further noted that the administration’s immediate priority is to ensure the free flow of water and prevent flooding-related disasters in vulnerable areas.
This measure comes in the backdrop of continuous rainfall across the state, which has already led to rising water levels in key rivers and triggered flooding in low-lying zones. The Imphal East District administration has reiterated its commitment to taking all necessary steps to protect public safety and maintain environmental integrity in the region.
