Immortal love story of Ashang and Aton immortalized: Statue unveiled at Ukhrul Mini-Secretariat

Ukhrul, May 20:
In a touching homage to one of the most legendary love stories of the Tangkhul Naga community, the statue of Shimreishang Zimikwo (Ashang) and Maitonphy Longleng (Aton) was unveiled today at the Ukhrul Mini-Secretariat. The ceremony was graced by Ukhrul Deputy Commissioner Asish Das, who expressed admiration for the artwork that immortalizes the timeless tale of love and sacrifice.
The sculpture commemorates the undying love of Ashang and Aton, whose story, set in Phungcham Yangreiram, has been passed down through seven generations. Despite their deep bond, societal barriers of different social classes kept them apart. Shimreishang died of a broken heart, while Maitonphy was married off to Pansa Vasah of Halang Village. Their souls, as legend has it, reunited in the afterlife, symbolizing eternal love beyond worldly constraints.
The statue was commissioned by former Ukhrul Deputy Commissioner Kengoo Zuringla and brought to life by artists Zeno Chiphang, Phanitphang Sarea, R.S. Mayonmi, and Yungrei Kashung. The project was a collaboration with like-minded individuals dedicated to preserving Tangkhul Naga culture and history.
The unveiling marks not only a tribute to love but also a testament to the rich cultural heritage of the Tangkhul community, now enshrined in stone for generations to witness and cherish.
