ILP agitation landed in catastrophe; students injured in lathi charge and tear gas explosion

Even as the state government is convening an all political party meeting today evening to discussed the demand for Inner Line Permit System in the state, there is no dearth for police excess to suppress the students demonstration in various part of Imphal valley. Police deployed at different part of the Imphal valley district today lathi charged and fire several rounds of tear gas shell to disperse students staging peaceful rally at Singjamei Thokchom Leikai and Soibam Leikai area.One police personnel sustain serious wound after the tear gas shell which he was trying to fire towards the student protestors exploded near his face. Identity of the police personnel could not be confirmed at the time of filling this report. Report said he stained serious injury at his face.Students of Rohini English School who were attending classes were also affected as the tear gas shell fired upon by the police landed near their class room. Panic ridden students of class 1 to 5 left with no choice but to close their nose with their little hand to avoid the gas.Children of the K care center located near Rohini School were also nearly suffocated by the impact of the tear gas firing. Locals and media persons intervene both the agitators and  police personnel and bring out all the kids from the building before any untowards incidents happened to them.As for the rally, it was staged by students of Manipur College. The students started the rally from their college at Singjamei at around 10 am. The rally proceeded towards Singjamei and than latter forwarded towards Chief Minister Bungalow. At Singjamei Thokchom Leikai area a huge police team prevented them from proceeding further. As the students did not listened to the police team the team started firing tear gas shell. The students too started throwing stones to the police team. In the course of police action five students were reported injured.

 

Imphal Times staff reporter Nganthoi Lourembam also sustained minor injury after she was hit by a stone while covering the news at the site.
