Imphal, Oct 18:

A solemn event commemorating the adoption of Manipur’s first constitution on October 18, 1948, was held today at the Manipur Dramatic Union Hall in Yaiskul Police Lane. The occasion was organized by United People’s Front (UPF), National Identity Protection Council (NIPCO), and Manipur Peace and Integrity Council (MAPI Council), highlighting the historical significance of this day in Manipur’s political journey before its merger with India.
The gathering, attended by notable dignitaries such as UPF President Nongthombam Rupachandra, NIPCO President Oinam Premjit, MAPI Council President KC Romeo, and United Committee Manipur (UCM) President YK Dhiren, began with a ceremonial lamp-lighting. Various women’s groups representing local organizations also participated in the observance.
In his keynote address, NIPCO President Oinam Premjit emphasized the importance of October 18, 1948, when Manipur adopted its own constitution, marking the beginning of a self-governed era after the British withdrawal. He noted that this day, often overlooked, is a crucial part of Manipur’s historical identity as a sovereign entity. Premjit also reflected on the challenges facing Manipur in the present day, particularly in preserving its cultural and political uniqueness under Indian governance.
“Today, as Manipur grapples with various crises, it is essential to remember the legacy of October 18, 1948. Our history, reflected in the adoption of our own constitution, should be a point of pride and a reminder of our distinct identity,” he remarked, stressing the need for greater public awareness of this significant day.
The event also featured speeches from UPF Advisor L. Jadumani and Dr. Yumnam Premananda, Head of the Department of Law at Manipur University, who discussed the political relevance of the constitution and its role in shaping Manipur’s self-governance during a crucial period of transition.
The speakers underscored the importance of safeguarding Manipur’s identity in light of modern challenges, and they called for renewed efforts to honor the legacy of the state’s first elected government. The gathering concluded with a call for more comprehensive inclusion of this historic chapter in school curricula to educate future generations about Manipur’s rich political history.
