A hand grenade was discovered at the gates of GP Women’s College in Imphal on Monday morning, causing panic among passersby. The college is situated less than 100 meters from the Raj Bhavan and 300 meters from the chief minister’s official residence, as well as the Manipur Police headquarters.
Upon receiving reports of the grenade, police quickly cordoned off the area and initiated measures to safely remove the device, ensuring the safety of nearby individuals and students.
Authorities are investigating the incident to determine the motivations behind the threat and ensure the safety of the college and surrounding areas.
In response to the bomb threat, students from the college organized a protest, expressing their outrage and fear over the incident. Yumkhaibam Sabana, a third-semester student, stated, “We condemn such incidents. If they have anything against the college, they should approach the authorities instead of targeting us, the women students here in the college. They should approach higher authorities instead of threatening students.”
The discovery of the grenade comes at a time when several educational institutions in the Imphal Valley have been experiencing extortion threats. Notably, a note was found with the grenade, demanding free education for “proletarian students” and criticizing the existing education system as fascist. The note read, “Down with fascist education system, honour the right of proletarian students; glory to the proletarian students.”
