In a historic and grandiose coronation ceremony that combined the traditions of the past with the ethos of modernity, Qr/ Eno. Gam Angkang Shimray was officially crowned the sovereign head of Chingjui Christian Village (CV) on Wednesday. The event, held at the headman’s residence in Chingjui, was witnessed by thousands of esteemed guests, dignitaries, and prominent citizens from Ukhrul District and beyond.
Qr. Gam Angkang Shimray, who is currently serving his second term as Secretary General of the Asia Indigenous Peoples Pact (AIPP), took the mantle of leadership with grace and humility. AIPP, a regional organization with membership spanning 14 countries, is accredited to the United Nations’ ECOSOC. Gam Angkang’s extensive experience as a human rights activist and governance expert, based in Chiang Mai, Bangkok, positions him as a transformative leader for his people.
The coronation began with a heartfelt blessing from the outgoing chief, Qr. Raizar Angkang Shimray, an octogenarian who had faithfully served the village for decades. In a symbolic transfer of authority, Raizar crowned his younger brother with the Tangkhul traditional headgear, Spear and Holy Bible and invoking God’s blessings for wisdom and strength. Addressing the congregation, he expressed gratitude for his years of service and shared his confidence in Gam Angkang’s ability to lead the community with dignity and integrity.
“Today, I pass on this sacred responsibility with full faith and blessings. May Gam Angkang carry forward the dreams of our people and fulfill the aspirations of Chingjui CV,” Raizar said, his voice heavy with emotion.
In his acceptance speech, Gam Angkang expressed gratitude to his clans under the Angkang Shimray lineage and R-shang ,T-Shang, M- Shang, SK- Shang, K- Shang and Soro Shang- for their unwavering trust.
He acknowledged the weight of his new role, describing it as both a privilege and a challenge. “Leadership is not about comfort; it is a commitment to sacrifice and service.’ Ramyana’ – ‘ Ramvaka’ is not easy as it require commitment and great responsibility on his shoulder as the first citizens of the village at that he is ready to sacrifice all his comfort for the sake of the people and expressed that he stands with the people , safeguard their rights and will work sincerely adhering to public interest and assured to protect and uphold the Tangkhul traditions with unwavering dedication,” he affirmed.
Speaking to this journalist, Gam Angkang elaborated on the significance of the Tangkhul Wung system—a democratic village governance model rooted in equality and collective decision-making. He emphasized its relevance even in contemporary times, likening it to the ancient Greek democratic systems. “Our Wung system has no political parties, only the shared vision of community welfare. It is a legacy we must preserve and adapt for future generations,” he remarked.
The coronation ceremony saw the participation of headmen from many neighboring villages, including Ukhrul/ Hunphun headman Qr. HA. Khayaiwo, leaders from Senapati District, Nagaland, and organizations such as the United Naga Council (UNC), Tangkhul Naga Long (TNL), Tangkhul Naga Awunga Long( TNSL), Tangkhul Ato Longphang. Human rights activists, former ANSAM leaders, and villagers from across Ukhrul district gathered to honor the occasion.
One of the significant guest amongst thousands of important guest was Qr/ Eno.Nganingkhui @AmeiKhui Chief Justice of NSCN/ GPRN.
The event concluded with a blessing mass prayer led by the President of Tangkhul Naga Awunga Long (TNAL), symbolizing unity and collective hope for a prosperous future under Gam Angkang’s leadership. The ceremony was a remarkable reminder of the enduring strength of traditional governance systems and their harmonious coexistence with modern aspirations.
As Gam Angkang Shimray takes on this new role, the community looks forward to a future of stability, progress, and the preservation of their rich cultural heritage.
