Normal functioning of government offices came to a halt across Naga-inhabited hill districts as the All Naga Students’ Association, Manipur (ANSAM) enforced a 48-hour office picketing protest beginning June 2, 2025. The protest is in response to the ongoing construction of the Indo-Myanmar border fencing and the unilateral cancellation of the Free Movement Regime (FMR), which the student body strongly opposes.
In Senapati district, the protest was spearheaded by the Senapati District Students’ Association (SDSA) and its federating units—Mao Students’ Union (MSU), Maram Students’ Union (MKS), Poumai Naga Students’ Union (PNTM), Thangal Students’ Union (TAJ), and Zeliangrong Students’ Union, Senapati Zone (ZSU-SZ). All government offices remained shut during the protest, severely affecting administrative operations.
Tensions escalated on today (Tuesday) at the Senapati district headquarters when a vehicle belonging to the Superintendent of Police (SP) was reportedly damaged in a confrontation. According to sources, a scuffle broke out following the alleged non-compliance of the SP with the picketing, leading to a heated exchange with protestors.
ANSAM has reiterated its opposition to any decision undermining the historical and traditional rights of the Naga people, particularly regarding unrestricted movement across the Indo-Myanmar border. The protest is part of a broader campaign demanding recognition and respect for these rights.
