Government issues flood advisory for Imphal Valley

The Water Resources Department, Government of Manipur, has issued an advisory warning of potential flooding in the Imphal valley following heavy rainfall in Kangpokpi, the primary catchment area of the Imphal river.
According to the department, rainfall data recorded from 6 am on May 28 to 6 am on May 31 shows a cumulative total of 175 mm over 72 hours, significantly exceeding the flood-trigger threshold of 135 mm. Kangpokpi alone received 123 mm of rainfall in the 24-hour period from May 30 to May 31.
The department recalled that a similar downpour of 131 mm in a single day in May 2024, in the wake of Cyclone Remal, had led to widespread river breaches and floods across the Imphal valley.
As of 10:00 am today, the Imphal River is already flowing above the High Flood Level. Overflows and breaches have been reported at multiple locations. The department has cautioned that runoff water from Kangpokpi will continue to reach the valley, potentially causing further overflows along various stretches of the Imphal River.
The Water Resources Department has strongly advised immediate evacuation of residents living in the flood plains of the Imphal River within the city.
