Former MLA and scholar Qr. Peter Pheirei passes away at 87; Tangkhul community mourns a stalwart leader

Qr. Peter Pheirei, former Member of the Manipur Legislative Assembly (1971) from Chingai Assembly Constituency and a towering figure in Tangkhul society, passed away peacefully at his residence in Viewland, Ukhrul at 4:00 AM on Tuesday. He was 87.
Born on March 4, 1938, in Phungcham Village, Peter Pheirei’s life was marked by an unwavering dedication to education, public service, and the preservation of tribal identity and justice. His academic journey, which began at Phungcham L.P. School, culminated with multiple degrees—P.U., B.A., M.A., and LL.B.—from Guwahati University by 1969.
He began his professional life in education, first as Headmaster in Meluri and Raphei High Schools and later as a Lecturer in Political Science at Pettigrew College, Ukhrul. In 1971, he was elected as an MLA, becoming one of the youngest Tangkhul representatives at the age of 32.
His contributions to the community extended far beyond politics. He served as President of the Tangkhul Naga Long (1987–88), Legal Advisor to various community bodies, and Chief Justice of TNL (2006–07). He was also a prolific writer, with works such as Wung Tangkhul Customary Law, Relation between the Tribals of Manipur and the Maharaja, and Illegal, Unhistorical Trial of the Lord Jesus Christ.
A condolence service was held at TNL Hall, Ukhrul, where hundreds paid their respects. Ex-Minister Khashim Vashum and TNL President Sword Vashum expressed profound sorrow, remembering him as a dedicated public servant, advocate, and cultural torchbearer.
Peter Pheirei’s remains have been taken to his native village, Phungcham, where he will be laid to rest on Wednesday. His life, filled with wisdom, humility, and leadership, leaves behind an enduring legacy that will continue to guide future generations.
