Imphal, Oct 20:
The Federation of Civil Society Organisations (FOCS), Manipur, has issued a stern warning, condemning the continued violence carried out by Kuki militant groups in the state. In a strongly worded press release, FOCS highlighted the escalation of attacks since May 3, where Kuki militants have allegedly employed drones, aerial bombings, and surface-to-surface missiles to target Meitei communities. The organisation criticized both the state and central governments for their failure to take prompt action to protect civilians from this growing threat.
According to the press release, Kuki militants have been using sophisticated weaponry in areas surrounding Moirang, leading to significant destruction and displacement of civilians. The most recent attack occurred on October 16, where residents, including women and children, were forced to flee their homes due to the destruction caused by militant-led bombings. It also mentions the recent attack on police station at Jiribam.
FOCS urged Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Prime Minister Narendra Modi to publicly condemn these attacks and take immediate steps to restore peace in the region. The organisation cautioned that if left unaddressed, the ongoing violence could have severe geopolitical consequences, destabilizing not only Manipur but also threatening India’s internal security and regional stability.
The civil society organisation further expressed concerns about recent meetings between state MLAs and BJP spokesperson Dr. Sambit Patra. FOCS claimed that these meetings signaled a potential government plan to carve out a separate union territory for the Kuki community, a move they believe would only serve to further destabilize the region. FOCS warned that any attempt to divide Manipur by granting union territory status to the Kuki-dominated areas would have serious repercussions for the region’s stability and could lead to a mass uprising.
