Imphal, April 24:
The Federation of Civil Society Organisations (FOCS), Manipur, has constituted an organizing committee and nine sub-committees to facilitate the successful observance of May 3 as a “Day of Remembrance and Reflection.” The event will be held at Yumnam Khunou Community Hall under the Khundrakpam Assembly Constituency.
Addressing media persons, BM Yaima, Acting President of FOCS, stated that the event will be held under the theme “Bridging Divides for a Shared Future.” The organizing committee will be chaired by BM Yaima, while M. Yaima Meitei has been appointed as the secretary, and Rakesh Moirangthem will serve as convenor.
To ensure smooth execution of the programme, nine sub-committees have been formed. These include committees for finance, publicity, transportation, mobilization, medical aid, refreshments, printing and invitations, reception, and programme coordination.
BM Yaima appealed to the public to take part in the observance and show solidarity. He informed that the programme will feature discussions on the challenges faced by internally displaced persons (IDPs), giving them a platform to share their experiences and concerns. He added that the issues raised will be submitted to the concerned government authorities during the next round of talks. “We have already placed key points before the Centre, and the specific concerns of the IDPs will be added as part of our ongoing dialogue,” Yaima said.
He also urged transport operators to cooperate by assisting in the transportation of people to the event site.
The observance marks the second anniversary of the ethnic violence that erupted on May 3, 2023. FOCS has described the outbreak as a coordinated assault by armed illegal immigrants against the indigenous Meitei population, calling it an “undeclared war” that left a deep scar on the social and cultural fabric of Manipur.
The organization further criticised the state’s lack of timely response during the crisis, which left many communities vulnerable. In the absence of effective state intervention, many young people reportedly took up the mantle of village volunteers, stepping forward to defend their homes and communities. FOCS praised their bravery, calling their actions a testament to the resilience and determination of the people.
Through the May 3 observance, FOCS seeks to honour the lives lost, acknowledge the struggles of the displaced, and foster a spirit of healing and unity among all communities. The event is expected to witness wide participation from civil society organizations, community leaders, and the general public.
