Flood situation improves, but suffering persists

The flood situation in Manipur has shown signs of improvement with water levels in major rivers receding following a decline in rainfall. However, large parts of low-lying areas in Imphal East remain inundated, and residents continue to grapple with the aftermath.
Since May 31, heavy rainfall had triggered widespread flooding, displacing thousands and damaging infrastructure. While water levels in the Imphal, Kongba, and Nambul rivers have begun to fall, the floods have left behind damaged homes, thick mud deposits, and broken embankments, forcing many to take refuge in relief camps.
According to official estimates, over 165,000 people have been affected and approximately 35,242 houses damaged across the state. The agricultural sector has also been hit hard, with 115.59 hectares of crop land destroyed, potentially affecting the livelihood of many farmers.
Relief and rescue operations are ongoing, led by civil society organisations, security forces, and local volunteers. So far, 4,097 individuals have been evacuated and housed in 78 relief camps, where they are being provided with basic amenities.
Tragically, the disaster claimed a life on Tuesday, when a 57-year-old man was swept away by a swollen river in Imphal West district. The incident underscores the continuing danger in flood-hit areas, even as the immediate threat seems to be diminishing.
Authorities have expressed concern over the risk of post-flood disease outbreaks due to stagnant water and poor sanitation. Relief efforts will continue until full normalcy is restored, with the government closely monitoring weather forecasts to address any renewed threats.
As Manipur begins its recovery, coordination among state agencies, the military, and the public remains critical to rebuilding affected communities.
