Large number of people today paid floral tribute to Sapam Robinhood on his 10th death anniversary at Yelhoumeeshinggi Ningshing Khubam, a memorial site dedicated to him at Awa Ching in Imphal East. The solemn event was marked by the presence of civil society organisations, student bodies, local clubs, and individuals who gathered to honour the young student’s legacy.
Robinhood, who was then a Class XI student of Ananda Singh Higher Secondary School, lost his life on July 8, 2015, during a police action while participating in a public agitation demanding the implementation of the Inner Line Permit System (ILPS) under the banner of the Joint Committee on Inner Line Permit System (JCILPS). He was just 17 years old at the time of his death.
In recognition of his courage and sacrifice for the cause of protecting the indigenous people of Manipur, Robinhood was posthumously conferred the title “Lamjing Meira”, meaning “The Torch Bearer”.
Speaking at the memorial programme, the Co-Convenor of the Sapam Robinhood Ningshing Thouram stated that Robinhood had laid down his life for the future and protection of the indigenous people of Manipur, making the ultimate sacrifice in the face of injustice. He added that the student’s death became a defining moment in the people’s movement demanding constitutional safeguards for the state.
The 10th death anniversary was observed with floral tributes, speeches, and public participation, jointly organised by the Manipuri Students’ Federation (MSF) along with various civil society organisations, student unions, clubs, and concerned citizens. The event reflected a collective spirit of remembrance and renewed the call to uphold the ideals for which Sapam Robinhood gave his life.
