The Federation of Haomee has urged the Manipur government to ensure adequate security arrangements for the upcoming Siroy Lily Festival, scheduled to be held from May 20 to 24, 2025. The organization stated that the festival, which draws visitors from across the globe, should be elevated to an international level beginning in 2026, and preparations to achieve this goal must start well in advance.
In a press statement, the Federation stressed that public confidence in safety is essential for the successful conduct of the festival. It called on the government to make its security measures public and ensure that all attendees can participate without fear.
The group raised concern over recent reports of threats allegedly issued by a Kuki group discouraging Meitei community members from attending the festival. Although another Kuki group has reportedly denied any association with the statement, the Federation pointed out that this has not assured safe travel for Meitei people through areas under Kuki control.
The Federation expressed disappointment over the government’s silence in response to such threats and said it was deeply concerned about the possibility of violent incidents, drawing comparisons with past terror attacks in other parts of India. It also criticized the continued blockade of National Highways and the lack of a firm response from both the state and central governments.
The organization concluded that if the government sincerely wishes to celebrate the Siroy Lily Festival as a peaceful and inclusive event, it must take concrete steps to guarantee the safety of all participants. It also cautioned against any retaliatory sentiments, stating that such an approach would only escalate tensions.
