In Heirok, Thoubal District, a farm owner allegedly shot and killed a farm worker using his licensed firearm. Following the incident, a Joint Action Committee (JAC) protesting the gruesome act and threaten series of agitation if justice is not served.
According to police sources, the incident occurred around 8:30 PM at Heirok Khangarok, under Heirok police station in Thoubal district, which occurred during a feast to celebrate the inauguration of the new farm.
The deceased worker has been identified as Laishram Tombi, 45 years old, son of the late Laishram Khomei, from Heirok Part-2, Devi MandopLeikai. The accused farm owner has been identified as Ningthoujam Rajnikanta, 44 years old, son of the late Ningthoujam Mengjor, from Heirok Part-2, Mayai Leikai. The crime scene is about 4 kilometers away from their residence. The police stated that upon arrest, the accused admitted to shooting the victim with his gun.
The report further added that yesterday was the inauguration of a newly constructed farm of the accused. After the inauguration, Rajnikanta and a few others were having dinner at the farm. Over a heated argument, Rajnikanta shot Tombi with his gun at his head. Tombi was first taken to Thoubal District Hospital, where doctors declared him dead. His body was later shifted to the JNIMS mortuary.
Upon hearing about the incident, enraged locals gathered at the residence of Rajnikanta and protested against the killing, vandalizing the accused’s house.
Reports from witnesses say that in the morning of the incident, Rajnikanta also fired a blank shot in honour of the inauguration, which enraged the attendees.
Late Tombi’s wife, Laishram Padama, has demanded to know the reason behind her husband’s cold-blooded murder. She expressed that her husband was a simple person who worked for a simple life, had no enmity with anyone, and questioned what led to such a cruel act. She is now left with three children and has conveyed concerns about how she will bring them up, as the family was supported solely by her husband’s earnings.
In relation to this incident this morning, at around 8:00 AM, a large number of people gathered at the Divine Nongpok Ningthou Youths Club at Heirok Part-2, Devi Mandop Leikai, and formed a JAC under the name “JAC Against Cold-Blooded Murder of Laishram Tombi,” aiming to intensify the movement and demand justice from the government.
The newly formed JAC termed the killing as pre-planned and demanded appropriate legal action against Rajnikanta, along with other accomplices. The JAC also demanded Rs. 50 lakh in ex-gratia compensation to the victim’s family from the accused’s family.
Furthermore, the JAC has also demanded that the victim’s last rites be conducted on the farm where the incident took place and has also declared that the deceased’s body will not be claimed until the demands have been met.
