Enat Yokkhatpa Lup (EYOL) Manipur today organised a get-together-cum-YouTube channel launching programme at Konthoujam, highlighting its ongoing campaign to promote and protect Manipuri culture and traditions.
Speaking at the event, Enat Yokkhatpa Lup Manipur General Secretary Mayengbam Dhananjoy stated that public trust in the organisation’s activities has been steadily growing. He said the organisation has so far conducted more than one hundred and fifty programmes across the state with the objective of safeguarding cultural values and social ethics. He informed that Enat Yokkhatpa Lup was formed in August two thousand twenty four and has since been working to curb excessive expenditure associated with cultural rituals, particularly marriages and related ceremonies.
Mayengbam Dhananjoy expressed concern that even funerals are increasingly being conducted in an ostentatious and royal manner, which he said is adversely affecting the social fabric. He added that the organisation has been continuously spreading awareness against unnecessary spending that undermines the traditional essence of Manipuri customs and rituals.
The programme was attended by All Manipur Working Journalists’ Union President Asem Bhakta, Editors’ Guild Manipur President Khogendra Khongdram, and Longjam Sanathoi President Longjam Sanathoi.
Professor Sanatomba of Manipur University, while addressing the gathering, spoke on the crucial role of the media in preserving and protecting indigenous culture. He said unchecked and excessive expenditure during cultural and traditional rituals erodes the authenticity of Manipuri culture and called for greater restraint in such practices. Describing the Enat Yokkhatpa Lup initiative as a need of the hour, Professor Sanatomba criticised the growing Indianisation of Manipuri culture and appealed for the inclusion of Manipuri cultural studies in academic curricula.
The organisers stated that the newly launched YouTube channel would serve as a platform to further spread awareness on cultural preservation and responsible social practices across the state.
