Drainage fails; Imphal floods in few minutes rain

Drainage system in Imphal city constructed under Jawarhalal Nehru Urban Renewal Mission (JNRUM) has been completely failed in Imphal as few minutes of hailstorm at around noon today flooded almost all streets of Imphal city.
The state was facing acute shortage of water, only a few days back with rivers and natural water storages gone almost dry. There was crisis over the distribution of drinking water with some local clubs prohibiting water tanker to pump water from the bed of Iril and Imphal River.
The hailstorm which began at around 1 pm today flooded almost all parts of Paona Bazaar, Thangal Bazaar, Secretariat roads and Keishamthong Elangbam Leikai roads. Interestingly Keishamthong Elangbam Leikai area water which were supposed to be drain through the newly constructed JNRUM drainage system runs out to the streets. The front part of Keishamthong Model School looks like a river. At Paona Bazar too the water remains stagnant as the drainage system was completely failed. The scenery was same in front of Secretariat office too.
