Dr. Sapam Ranjan, Minister for Information and Public Relations (IPR) and Health, called on media houses and journalists in Manipur to verify all news reports thoroughly before publication, warning that unverified information can create unnecessary panic in society. Speaking as the Chief Guest on the 76th Information and Public Relations Day held at the Directorate of Information and Public Relations (DIPR) office auditorium, Dr. Ranjan underscored the importance of responsible journalism, especially in reporting sensitive matters.
“The government takes journalists’ concerns seriously and will extend all possible support for their welfare,” Dr. Ranjan stated, reaffirming the administration’s commitment to supporting the media. He also highlighted the significant rise of digital media and its growing impact, encouraging the media to prioritize climate change issues affecting communities worldwide.
Dr. Th. Charanjeet Singh, Director of DIPR, attended the event as the Guest of Honor and provided a historical perspective on the department’s evolution. Established as a Publicity Office on November 1, 1949, DIPR has since served as a vital communication bridge between the government and the people, showcasing government initiatives, policies, and pro-people schemes.
Commissioner of IPR and Arts and Culture Department, M. Joy Singh, who presided over the function, noted the department’s progress over the years, attributing advancements to the media’s collaborative role. He also outlined the various welfare schemes introduced for journalists in the state and emphasized the importance of such observances as platforms for interaction among former and current employees and media representatives.
A commemorative booklet was released during the event, and three DIPR officials were honoured for their distinguished service. Additionally, a tribute was paid to the first Publicity Officer of the Directorate, R.K. Maipaksana, with his family receiving a citation and a shawl.
The event was attended by retired DIPR officials, media representatives, and officials from district offices, each receiving tokens of appreciation for their contributions.
