Imphal, July 30:
A devastating landslide struck Dimthanlong village last night, claiming the lives of a mother and her child and leaving one person, Ringsinlung Kahmei, critically injured.
In this heart-wrenching incident, the family in Dimthanlong village of Tamenglong District was shattered in their sleep. Around midnight, a mudslide from the hill slope above inundated and tore down the house of 32-year-old Ringsinlung Kahmei, instantly killing his 2-year-old son. Neighbors, hearing the loud noise, rushed out and found the family trapped inside the collapsed house and debris. They managed to rescue the severely injured mother and father and rushed them to the District Hospital. However, the mother, Duanzaengliu, 28, who was originally from Khoupum Valley, succumbed to her injuries on the way, asking about her baby boy’s well-being. The father, a constable serving in the Manipur Police, was referred to JNIMS Imphal for further medical treatment.
The deceased were taken to Tabanglong village, the permanent residence of Ringsinlung, to conduct their last rites. The baby boy, who had just started calling “mama” and “papa,” had a promising life ahead, now tragically cut short.
Since last night, heavy rainfall has wreaked havoc across Noney and Tamenglong districts, causing widespread landslides and mudslides that have severely disrupted normal life. Power supplies have been cut off, exacerbating the challenges faced by the residents.
A major landslide has blocked NH-37 (Imphal – Jiribam Road) between Nungba and Rengpang villages. The situation is particularly dire on the Bishnupur – Khoupum – Rengpang Road (Tongei Maril / Old Cachar Road), where a section of the tared road has been swept into a gorge between Taodaijang and Rengpang village. Local residents estimate that it will take several days to establish an alternative route. Additional landslides have occurred along NH-37 near K. Sinam village, further complicating travel and transportation in the area.
Chief Minister N. Biren Singh took to his X handle to express his condolences: “Deeply saddened to learn about the tragic loss of a mother and her child due to the landslide that occurred last night in Dimthanlong village, Tamenglong Ward No. 3. My heart goes out to the bereaved family. Our thoughts are with Mr. Ringsinlung Kahmei, who has been critically injured in this incident. We are taking immediate steps to ensure he receives the necessary medical attention and advanced care.”
Deputy Commissioner Tamenglong, Dr. Angshim Dangsava, IAS, along with Superintendent of Police Tamenglong, various District Level Officers, CSO leaders, and people from all walks of life, extended their condolences and assistance to the bereaved family. DC Tamenglong assured the gathering of all possible help, including the payment of ex-gratia to the next of kin of the deceased and financial assistance to the injured.
