Constable killed, six injured in road accident during return from medical check-up duty

A police constable lost his life and six others sustained injuries when a Tata Sumo vehicle, returning from a routine medical check-up of detained individuals allegedly under the influence of alcohol, met with a tragic accident near Lansonbi Bridge, located between Yurembam and Sagoltongba under the jurisdiction of Patsoi Police Station in Imphal West district.
The incident occurred around 12:30 PM when the Tata Sumo, which was following a DI Tata vehicle carrying the detainees, reportedly lost control and veered off the road into the Maklang river. The team was returning to Patsoi Police Station after conducting medical examinations of the intoxicated individuals at PHC Khumbong.
Preliminary reports suggest that the vehicle might have been speeding, leading to the accident soon after crossing Lansonbi Bridge. Constable No. 1901077, Soibam Sanjit (34), son of (L) Soibam Tomba of Salam Mayai Leikai and posted at Patsoi Police Station, succumbed to his injuries. Doctors declared him dead upon arrival at the hospital. The six injured personnel were rushed to RIMS and Raj Medicity for treatment.
Patsoi Police have registered a case in connection with the incident. The mortal remains of Constable Sanjit were taken to RIMS mortuary for postmortem. A solemn condolence service was held at the 1st Battalion Manipur Rifles, where fellow officers and personnel paid their final tributes.
In a separate road mishap later in the evening at around 6:30 PM, a Tiago car (NL07CA-0881) collided with a TVS Heavy Duty XL-100 (MN06SH-8167) near Pal Hotel at Sekmai along National Highway-2. The two-wheeler rider, identified as Umesh Dhungana (39), son of Khageshwor Dhungana of Kanglatongbi Mandir, sustained critical injuries and was initially taken to CHC Sekmai. He was later referred to Little Clinic, Nagaram, where he succumbed to his injuries around 9:40 PM.
Sekmai Police have registered a case regarding the second incident, and the body has been kept at RIMS mortuary for postmortem. The bereaved family has been informed.
