Congress accuses BJP for breaking 2014 pre-poll promises; calls Manipur violence biggest injustice

Imphal, Feb 17:

Ranajit Mukherjee, AICC Secretary, has criticized the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Prime Minister Modi for going back on pre-2014 promises, particularly regarding MSP based on the recommendations of late MS Swaminathan.
In a declaration made at Ambikapur in Chhattisgarh, the Congress party announced its commitment to enact a legal guarantee for Minimum Support Price (MSP) for various crops upon assuming power at the center in India. This announcement, addressing a long-standing demand of farmers nationwide, was underscored by the party’s resolution on Agriculture during its Raipur Session, emphasizing MSP as a top priority agenda once the Congress-led government takes office following the 2024 General Elections.
Ranjit Mukherjee, also, said that despite Modi’s prior commitments, an affidavit filed by the BJP government in the Supreme Court of India contradicted the promised MSP increase.
The statement also highlighted the ongoing farmers’ protests, citing instances of alleged excessive force by BJP-led authorities, notably in Haryana, to thwart peaceful marches. Mukherjee condemned these actions, likening them to tactics employed in conflict zones and questioning the necessity for such measures given the peaceful nature of the protests.
Furthermore, the statement addressed a range of unfulfilled promises and economic challenges during Modi’s tenure, including stagnant job creation, farmers’ income stagnation, adverse impacts of demonetization and GST implementation, and escalating prices of essential commodities despite favorable international market conditions.
The plight of Manipur, marked by prolonged unrest without substantive resolution efforts by the Modi government, was also highlighted as a grave injustice. It said “the continued unrest in Manipur for more than nine months without any genuine effort at resolution by the Modi Govt. is the biggest ‘Anyay’ in the country. We are still awaiting the Prime Minister to speak up on Manipur.”
Lastly, Mukherjee criticized the alleged media control exerted by the Modi government, decrying the suppression of dissenting voices and the monopolization of the narrative.
Despite these challenges, Mukherjee expressed optimism for change, asserting that the countdown to the end of injustice had begun, with the anticipation of a new era once the Congress assumed power.
