Chandel, May 2:

A one-day cleanliness drive was conducted along the Chakpi River, which flows through several villages in Chandel district. The initiative was jointly organized by the District Administration Chandel and the Maha Area Chief’s Association (MACA), with participation from local residents.
The drive commenced early in the morning, starting from Monsang Pantha village and finishing at Assam Rifles Base Camp in the Lamphou Pasna area. Aimed at restoring cleanliness in the Chakpi River, the campaign saw the involvement of village chiefs from 50 different villages under Chandel headquarters, who were divided into seven groups to cover various sections of the river.
Chairman of MACA, Js Angam Anal, highlighted the collective responsibility of preserving the Chakpi River. “This river is not meant for a single community; it is a shared resource for all. Fifty villages depend on this water. We urge everyone not to construct piggery sheds along the riverbanks and to refrain from dumping plastic waste and used diapers into the river,” he said.
He further encouraged continued commitment beyond the day’s effort, stating, “Let us not limit the cleaning of Chakpi River to today alone. Let’s make it a habit to keep it clean.”
Today’s cleanliness drive was also attended by Naorem Pritam, SDO Chandel, Chongtham Sanjoy, OC Chandel District police and Naorem Munal, DFO, Chandel Forest Division.
