Tension runs high in Manipur’s Churachandpur district following the vandalism and arson of government offices, including the Churachandpur Police Station, Mini Secretariat, and DC office late yesterday evening by a hostile mob. At least two people were killed, and as many as 40 are reported injured in security forces’ action while trying to control the mob. Tear gas shells were fired, and even gunshots were heard when the furious mob thronged inside the police station. Following yesterday’s incident, Churachandpur town resembles a deserted area, with almost all shops and business establishments closing shutters. The people of the district have been facing hardships with the crisis still continuing even after nine months. The instigator of the violent act – the ITLF – had called for a total shutdown before the district administration could impose restrictions on the movement of civilians under section 144 of the CrPC. Central Forces and the state police, however, were seen at various portions of the town.
Protesters claim that the protest occurred after a viral video and photo on social media showing Kuki militants with arms on February 14. Acting upon the viral video, the Superintendent of Police, Churchandpur district, suspended the head constable, Siamlalpaul for enquiry.
In response to escalating incidents of violence and arson, the Home Department of the Government of Manipur has imposed a ban on Mobile Data services in the district. The data ban was imposed to prevent the dissemination of inflammatory content via social media platforms. Citing concerns over potential threats to public safety and communal harmony, authorities have announced the temporary suspension of internet services in the entire revenue jurisdiction of Churachandpur District.
“Effective immediately from 1:40 A.M. on February 16, 2024, the suspension encompasses mobile data services, internet services, and services through VPNs, lasting for a period of five days. The order is subject to confirmation within 24 hours by the competent authority,” an order by Joint Secretary Home, Dr. Mayengbam Veto Singh, said.”
