Political leaders from both the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Indian National Congress in Manipur have mourned the loss of BSF Constable Deepak Chingakham, who was martyred in cross-border shelling along the International Border in Jammu’s R S Pura sector on May 10.
Constable Chingakham, a native of Yairipok Yambem in Imphal East, was among eight BSF personnel injured during unprovoked firing by Pakistani forces. He succumbed to his injuries on Sunday, May 11. He is survived by his parents and younger brother.
BJP Manipur president Adhikarimayum Sharda Devi expressed profound grief, describing Chingakham as “a brave son of Manipur” and praised his dedication to the nation. In a message posted on social media platform X, she stated, “His courage embodies the indomitable spirit of Manipur. We salute his sacrifice and extend our solidarity to his family and fellow soldiers during this painful time.”
Congress state president Keisham Meghachandra also conveyed his condolences, noting that Chingakham’s sacrifice reflects the highest form of patriotism. “His martyrdom is a matter of pride for Manipur and the entire country. We honour his ultimate sacrifice in service of the motherland,” he said.
The Border Security Force (BSF) confirmed the incident, stating that Constable Chingakham succumbed to fatal injuries sustained during shelling in the R S Pura area. The BSF also lost another soldier, Sub-Inspector Mohammed Imteyaz, in the same attack.
A wreath-laying ceremony in honour of Constable Chingakham was scheduled to be held at the BSF Frontier Headquarters on Monday.
The incident occurred amidst escalated tensions in the region following India’s launch of ‘Operation Sindoor’ in response to the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam.
