Ban on hunting migratory birds imposed in Noney District

IT News
Imphal, Oct 23:

The District Magistrate of Noney has issued a prohibitory order banning the hunting, capturing, killing, and selling of migratory birds, specifically the Amur Falcon (Falco amurensis), locally known as “Akhuaipuina.” This decision follows a formal request from the Divisional Forest Officer, dated October 23, 2024, citing concerns over the protection of wildlife under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.
The order, effective immediately, emphasizes that any hunting or destruction of wildlife is a punishable offense under Sections 50 and 51 of the aforementioned Act. The District Magistrate highlighted the critical importance of safeguarding migratory birds, which have recently arrived in various parts of the District and are expected to roost until the end of November—a vital period in the life cycle of the Amur Falcons.
In conjunction with the hunting ban, the District Magistrate has mandated the surrender of air guns within Noney District. All air guns must be deposited with local village authorities, who will oversee their safekeeping until the last flock of Amur Falcons leaves the area or until November 30, 2024. Village authorities, including those in Longmai, Raengkhung, Awangkhul, Taobam, Khongsang, Rengpang, Nungba, Kambiron, Khumji, Nagaching, Kabui-Khullen, Puichi, Bakwa, and Haochong, are responsible for this initiative.
The District administration urges the public to comply with these regulations to protect the wildlife and preserve the ecological balance in the region.
