In a tragic incident that shocked the RIMS campus community, a 21-year-old B.Sc Nursing student was found hanging inside an abandoned hostel building within the premises of the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal, at around 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday.
The deceased has been identified as Abiel Sanchiana, daughter of Dicky N. Sangma, a resident of Asananggre in West Garo Hills district, Tura, Meghalaya. She was a student of B.Sc Nursing and had been residing in Room No. 4 of the RIMS Nursing Hostel, which reportedly has a total of 180 rooms.
According to sources, the incident took place inside the old nursing hostel building, which has remained unused since it was damaged by a fire in 2017. How the student accessed the abandoned structure remains under investigation.
Upon receiving information, a team from Lamphel Police along with forensic science experts rushed to the scene and carried out an examination of the area. The police have registered a case and begun an investigation to ascertain the circumstances leading to the incident.
The body has been transferred to the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) morgue for post-mortem examination.
Authorities at RIMS and police officials have yet to issue a formal statement regarding the cause of death or any suspected foul play. Further details are awaited pending the autopsy report and ongoing investigation.
