Awareness Camp on Prevention and Control of Deafness concluded at Thoubal

One day Awareness Camp on prevention and control of deafness held at Tamphajao Bhavan, Thoubal Kshetrileikai concluded today. The programme was organised by State Health Society, Manipur and under National Programme for Prevention and Control of Deafness, National Health Mission Manipur. The programme was attended by Dr. T. Manihar Singh, Joint Director, Health Services, Govt. Of Manipur and W. Ibohal Singh, Retd. District Youth Coordinator, Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan were the Chief Guest and President respectively.
Ch. Basanta Singh, District Programme Manager, District Health Society Thoubal welcomed all the participating ASHAs, Anganwadi Workers and Youth club leaders. He also highlighted about the importance of organising the programme. He stated that the programme was organised for the 5th time in Thoubal District during this month. Similar programmes were organised at  Tekcham, Lilong, Thoubal Kiyam and Heirok villages of Thoubal district.
Dr. M.A. Sattar, ENT Specialist Resource Person of the day explained about the prevention and control of deafness to the public during the Awareness Campaign. He stated that hearing loss can be caused by aging, illness or disease, by excessive exposure to high noise levels and by trauma. Hearing loss is of mild, moderate and severe. He also says that
W. Ibohal Singh, Retd. District Youth Coordinator cautioned the present day youth who frequently used Loud Speakers and ear phones the fearness of hearing loss. He also expressed about the need for general awareness for using Loud Speakers and other noise who pollute the environment as well as increase of deafness in general public.
Dr. T. Manihar Singh, State Nodal Officer, NPPCD, State Health Society, Manipur explained about the hearing loss in children. He says that a newborn can suffer from hearing loss. It happens because of heredity, rubella or other infections in the pregnant mother, low birth weight of body, severe jaundice following birth or other illness such as maninglitis etc. He appealed the participants  to spread the awareness about the control of deafness. He says that there is hearing test facility at JNIMS and RIMS so hearing test for new born child should be done before they are discharged.
