Imphal, Feb 11:

The influential All Tribal Students’ Union Manipur (ATSUM) appreciated the Election Commission of India (ECI)’s move to reschedule the dates for the two-phase assembly elections in Manipur to February 28 and March 5.
The elections to the 60-member Manipur Assembly were earlier scheduled to be held on February 27 and March 3.
In a press communiqué on Friday, Khaiminlen Doungel, information & publicity secretary of ATSUM said, the positive response of the ECI to the call of the people to respect the practice and sentiments of minority Christians in the state of Manipur is candidly valued.
Significantly, ATSUM also acknowledges the political parties, politicians, AMCO (All Manipur Christian Organisation), civil organisations and individuals for asserting the rights of minority Christians in one voice and one accord with the principle of upholding secularism in the country, the communiqué stated.
On Thursday, heeding to the request of political parties, ATSUM and AMCO, the ECI had rescheduled the dates for the two-phase assembly elections in Manipur.
The decision to reschedule the first phase of polls comes after the demand by AMCO, ATSUM besides the Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee to hold elections on any day other than February 27 which is a Sunday and a day of worship for the Christian community.
