With an aim to address the cancer menace in northeast India, Assam yesterday wrote a success story with laying the foundation stone for 19 new cancer centres in the State. Bhartiya Janata Party president Amit Shah, in presence of Assam chief minister Sarbanand Sonowal, Arunachal Pradesh chief minister Pema Khandu, eminent industrialist Ratan Tata, State health minister Himanta
Biswa Sarma etc, laid the foundation stone in a function held in the city.
Addressing the gathering, Shah commented that healthcare facilities across the country have improved in the last four years. He insisted on improving the road and rail connectivity in northeastern States for comprehensive development. The BJP president also claimed that the
Central government has taken several initiatives for development of the region.
These hospitals will be set up under Assam Cancer Care Foundation, a non- profitable entity between Assam government and Tata Trusts with equal partnership to implement the project with an investment of rupees 1,910 crore. Those hospitals are expected to start functioning by 2020.
