A delegation of around fifteen representatives from various voluntary organizations in Hojai, Assam, arrived in Imphal to meet with Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh. They sought the state government’s immediate intervention in the current situation and the implementation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Manipur, emphasizing its significance in detecting illegal immigrants.
The conglomeration of organizations, known as the Unity of Meitei Society, Hojai, urged the Chief Minister to take prompt and decisive action to restore peace and tranquility. They expressed the belief that the introduction and implementation of the NRC in Manipur would be crucial in identifying and removing immigrants. The representatives called for the Chief Minister’s “kind and speedy action” in normalizing the situation, stating, “This is quite true to the best of our knowledge and belief that the unavoidable NRC may be kindly introduced and implemented so as to detect and delete the immigrants from Manipur.”
In addition to their appeal for NRC implementation, the society also urged the Chief Minister to grant Scheduled Tribe (ST) status to the Meitei community as early as possible. They highlighted the importance of this status to provide equal opportunities for Meiteis in all sectors. The representatives also brought attention to the challenges faced by the people in national highways and called upon the Chief Minister to address issues related to bandhs and blockades on the Imphal to Dimapur and Imphal to Jiribam highways, urging smooth connectivity for the people.
Concerning agriculture, particularly paddy cultivation, the society appealed to the Chief Minister to provide essential facilities to impoverished farmers residing in tense and disrupted rural areas. They emphasized the need for support to ensure proper cultivation practices.
Furthermore, the delegation requested the Chief Minister to take immediate and effective action to enable affected individuals, displaced in various pockets, including in relief camps, to return to their respective homes as soon as possible from the relief camps.
Moreover, the society members visited various relief camps and extended assistance to address the essential needs of those residing in these camps. The relief camps, including those in Moirang, Sendra, Tera Khongsangbi, Konjengbam Leikai, Khundrakpam, Pukhao, Haraorou, and Pourabi, that have been established by the government and various organizations across the state.
