The All Manipur United Clubs’ Organisation (AMUCO) has reiterated its call to collectively resist agendas that threaten the territorial integrity of Manipur. In a press statement issued ahead of June 14, which the organisation observes annually as a protest day, AMUCO warned that certain policies adopted under the guise of Indian governance are aimed at dividing communities and distorting Manipur’s historical and cultural unity.
Pratap Leishangthem, General Secretary of AMUCO, stated that some communities are being misled by emotionally charged narratives that promote divisive policies. He warned that such moves could erode long-standing trust among indigenous communities who have peacefully coexisted for generations. The organisation expressed concern that the trend of invoking emotional and political sentiments to challenge the state’s boundaries could lead to serious consequences.
Referring to the June 14, 2001, Bangkok Declaration—particularly the clause on “Ceasefire Extension Without Territorial Limit”—AMUCO recalled its strong opposition to the inclusion of Manipur in the agreement. It noted that the declaration disregarded the emotional and historical bonds shared by the people of the state and marked a turning point in the Indian government’s approach toward Manipur’s internal affairs.
Since then, AMUCO has observed June 14 as a protest day to commemorate the sacrifices made in defense of Manipur’s territorial integrity and to oppose what it calls the divisive policies of the Government of India. The day serves as a collective expression of the people’s will to protect the state’s identity and boundaries.
The statement noted that the Indian government’s policies are not confined to the hill areas but are spreading across the valley, posing a threat to the entire state. AMUCO cautioned that such policies have the potential to spark unrest and conflict by weakening indigenous institutions and identities. The organisation also alleged that demographic engineering—through population influx, recognition of illegal immigrants as citizens, and strategic settlement—aims to destabilize the socio-political fabric of Manipur.
AMUCO further warned that these developments are no longer just political challenges but constitute a direct assault on the soul, land, and culture of the people of Manipur. It expressed deep concern that the cumulative effect of these policies could lead to irreversible damage.
Drawing a historical comparison, AMUCO pointed out that similar threats existed during the British colonial era, but Manipur managed to overcome them. It urged all communities in the state to remain vigilant and united against any attempt to alter Manipur’s history or territorial identity.
The organisation reaffirmed its stand to uphold the unity and integrity of the state, asserting that the people of Manipur would never accept any measure that compromises its territorial and cultural heritage.
