AMUCO condemns ‘Separation Day’ observance in Churachandpur, warns of double standards by Centre

Imphal, April 3:

The All Manipur United Clubs’ Organisation (AMUCO) has strongly condemned the observance of “Separation Day” by Kuki-Zo Organisations in Churachandpur district, calling it a challenge to the peace process and accusing the central government of adopting a double standard in handling the issue.
In a statement issued today, AMUCO said the recent permission granted by the Churachandpur district administration for the “Separation Day” event is alarming and sets a dangerous precedent. “The DC of Churachandpur already knows the intent of this programme, as it was organised last year as well. Then why was permission granted again? Why wasn’t the programme cancelled?” the organisation questioned.
According to AMUCO, Kuki-Zo organisations have openly declared May 3 as a symbolic day to advance their demand for a separate administration or Union Territory. “It is deeply concerning, as the permission granted by the district authority signals an unofficial endorsement, which contradicts the Union Home Minister’s earlier statement that no separate administration will be allowed,” AMUCO warned.
The organisation pointed out that violent incidents—including attacks on the offices of the SP and DC in Churachandpur, acts of arson, and destruction of properties belonging to Meitei communities—have continued with impunity since the outbreak of violence in May 2023.
Yet, no significant action has been taken against the perpetrators. AMUCO also alleged that Kuki militants continue to bear arms openly and dominate regions such as Churachandpur and Kangpokpi, despite being under Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreements with security forces.
AMUCO further questioned the role of Manipur’s Governor under President’s Rule, stating that despite 80 days under central administration, there has been little improvement in restoring peace or addressing the concerns of valley-based communities. “The Governor appears more focused on inaugurating office buildings and laying foundation stones while ignoring the core political and security issues affecting the state,” the statement said.
The organisation warned that such actions—or lack thereof—will only deepen the perception that Manipur is being treated with indifference by the central government. AMUCO accused the Centre of pursuing a “divisive policy” by supporting Kuki organisations allegedly backed by armed groups.
