13-year-old boy found hanged to death at Jiribam relief camp

A 13-year-old boy was found hanged to death inside the Jiribam Higher Secondary relief camp in the early hours of today, sending shockwaves among displaced families taking shelter there. The deceased is a resident of Borobekra Sub-division, Jiribam district.
According to police, the incident occurred around 2 am. The boy’s body was discovered inside the camp, and authorities were immediately alerted. Jiribam district police retrieved the body and transported it to Jiribam Hospital. Sources confirmed that a postmortem will be conducted at Silchar Medical College and Hospital, Gungoor. A case has been registered at Jiribam police station, and an investigation is underway to determine the circumstances leading to the tragic death.
The victim’s family, along with many others from Lamtaikhunou, had been living at the relief camp after fleeing their village. Their homes were destroyed amid escalating violence in the ongoing conflict between the Meitei and Kuki communities. Residents had faced repeated threats from Kuki insurgents, prompting a mass exodus to safer locations.
The Jiribam Higher Secondary relief camp was established to provide temporary shelter, food, and security for displaced families. However, the tragic incident has once again drawn attention to the immense psychological trauma and instability faced by evacuees, many of whom have been struggling to rebuild their lives while coping with loss and uncertainty.
Authorities said they are closely examining the case, while local residents expressed grief and concern over the mental and emotional toll the prolonged violence is taking on children and families in relief camps.
