The Israeli Coalition

With a new coalition government in Israel, we are reaching a new problem. The problem is that in a coalition government, every partner has to be consulted extensively. This may backfire in case of any emergency, especially in a country like Israel which faces continuous threats to its security throughout the year.
For example, in case of a war, if there is a single party led government like in the case of US and if the legislature has a majority of ruling party politicians, it is easy to take action.
The Congress govt of Indira Gandhi was decisive in case of the 1971 war as a simple talk with the Opposition leaders was good enough. Today’s Opposition is not as cooperative and reasonable as the Opposition in 1971.
A ruling party in case of a coalition government cannot be undemocratic. That is an imperative but this principle works fine in case of a normalcy only. In times of a calamity, a strong government aided by competent advisers and a cooperative Opposition is the best.
A major problem in the coalition government of Mr Naftali Bennett is that the Arab party in the coalition government will also have a say now. Mr Bennett will not be able to ignore his coalition partner and adopt a hardline stance on Hamas and Palestinian jihadi groups.
This may fundamentally pose a major security threat to Israel. It is imperative for the coalition government in Israel to work together and promote the well being of Israel and the security of Israel and its people.
