Conceding to terrorism

Five years to this day, one of the most horrific acts of terrorism shocked and rocked the world. The ruthlessness and audacity with which the deadly mission was carried out changed the very concept of terrorism from that of a group misguided and fanatical radicals to one with immense resources and knowledge backed by a well-orchestrated and highly networked system that can strike anywhere, anytime. America, considered the superpower of the world bore the brunt of the unprecedented assault, and made the nation and reflect on its perceived invincibility, along with the rest of the world as to the real and present state of affairs. The method in the madness of the incident, now known as the 9/11 disaster, driving home the point that there is more to it than meets the eye in these acts of terror, where ever in the world it may happen. What the world, and certainly the state government closer home, should focus on is not the act, but rather the resolve and swiftness with which America struck back without hesitation or let-up. The relentless search and pursuit of Osama Bin Laden, mastermind and architect of the modern day holocaust is nothing less than a fictional thriller. That he was finally tracked down and neutralized from his hideout only goes to show the single mindedness of the American Government and its resoluteness in its fight against terrorism. And while a few of the nations decried the apparent aggressive step taken by the US Government, yet the world as a whole now is that much better, notwithstanding the fact that terrorists and acts of terrorism will continue to be perpetrated. Juxtapose this scenario with that of the current situation in our very own state. on the one hand, various social organizations and student bodies have agitated and caused quite a stir in the society demanding the implementation of the Inner Line Permit System in Manipur for a long time now, while the protracted issue of “Integration of Naga inhabited areas in the state” have caused untold misery and inconveniences to the people of the state irrespective of their caste, race, community or social status. There are, needless to say, a plethora of other demands and agitations, the veracity of their claims yet to be officially declared by the Government. The genesis of a majority of these social disturbances and unrest should be attributed to this very nature of the state Government trying to walk the fence and letting issues fester. While popular politics might prolong the run for a particular political party, what the society, especially a highly volatile one like ours need is a decisive and resolute governance which can keep the society in check. What we have witnessed in recent times, unfortunately, is to the contrary. The velvet gloves must come off. It is time to lay down the rules in no uncertain terms for the society, and most importantly, the Government itself to follow and upkeep. Declaring holidays for schools and wasting more of an already disturbed academic curriculum merely on the perceived danger of another agitation will be akin to bowing down to pressure and terrorism, and relinquishing its authority by the Government.
