The state at stake

The state witnessed yet another display of the extent to which the government can go in trying to make a point to any individual or group agitated and frustrated enough to question its decisions and resolutions. It has also demonstrated the inherent mentality of making an example while it still has the upper hand without giving any thought or consideration to the possible aftermath of their actions, perhaps emboldened by the evident immunity and invincibility they have so far enjoyed. The fury and intensity with which the state security force unleashed violence on the students for agitating and demanding the implementation of ILP system in the state has to be seen to believe. The unfortunate event which unfolded yesterday drives home the point that the only system or manner of governance which the present government is capable of is the use of brute force, coercion and procrastination to achieve their unexpressed intents. The shabby discipline and inexperience of the state security forces in controlling the agitators was very evident, and instead of controlling the crowd, they created chaos and confusion, and as if that is not enough, unleashed a king of violence which is nothing short of violation of human rights of the students. Even those who have hidden themselves to escape the onslaught were dragged from their hiding places and made to taste the brutality, perhaps the only way they were trained to deal with civilians and the general public. The protracted issue of implementation of Inner Line Permit (ILP) system in the state also needs a rethinking on the part of the government, not necessarily to appease the agitators or prevent rampant influx of migrants from other states in the country, but only if to prepare itself to successfully fend off increasing instances of infiltrations from across the border, which brings up a statement made by Nitin Gadkari, former President of BJP to the effect that the most stringent law to check infiltration, whether it be the ILP or otherwise, should be implemented along all the porous border areas of the country to check and reduce infiltrations which is still an unacknowledged but serious threat to the stability and progress of the country. On the other hand, the opposition to the state Government’s New Land Use Policy (NLUP) by various tribal groups on the ground that the lands in the hill districts of Manipur are in the hands of traditional chieftains, and that the new policy is a threat to the tribal way of life will have fewer takers with the implementation of ILP since it will have reassured them of their concerns, as well as reduce the increase in the scramble for limited space in the state- a growing concern for every inhabitant of Manipur. The state government should look into the genesis of the issue and make necessary steps to allay the fears and concerns of the people instead of unleashing fear and intimidation to suppress the growing discontent. Prolonging and sidestepping the issue will foment more trouble and unrest. The state has seen enough upheaval that had further delayed the progress and development. We cannot afford to waste any more time, energy or precious resources if we are to try and catch up with the rest of the world. We are ready and willing to follow and support a decisive and far-sighted leader with integrity. Is there such a capable person to lead the society in the state?
