Phenomenal rise in the number of crime against women and children has been everyone’s concern in the bygone 2014. The launching of mobile phone application ‘Himmat’ for safety of women in the national capital by Delhi police shows that the law enforcing body is spending sleepless night, sorting out to find some effective ways to control the rise in crime against women.
The rate of crime on women and children is no less in this trouble torn state of Manipur. According to report highlighted by a civil society organisation working on women’s safety, the state had witness a total of 313 cases of crime against women and children in 2014. Out of these a total of 23 cases were about insulting the modesty of women including the minor children. These are cases which were reported and there are possibilities that many more cases of the similar kinds might have gone unreported. The scenario suggested that the rate of crime against women and children in this trouble torn state of Manipur is no less when compare to those happened in the national capital.
Crime on women and children has emerged as a major concern for law enforcement agencies all over the country. In a place like Delhi, Mumbai or Bangalore, the law enforcing agency showed some concern to contain it by evolving new strategies and methods of combating violence against women.
When it comes to the state of Manipur, the scenario is somewhat different. Of the 313 cases none of it has been charged sheeted. In almost all the cases, the law enforcers succeeded in detaining few accused under their custody in response to the wrath of the general public, but this accused were let go freely either on bail or due to the blessing of some powerful as the state police had failed to frame charge sheet against them.
May be it was due to non availability of enough evidences, but then the so called cops need to show something to prove their effort in trying to control the ever rising rate of the crime against women and children in the state.
Delhi police had at least taken up some initiative by introducing the mobile phone application Himmat for safety of the women. What have the Manipur state police taken up to control this sort of crime?
