As we commemorate International Women’s Day, we must acknowledge the reality faced by women in Manipur amidst the ongoing violence that grips the region. While the struggle for peace and stability continues, women bear the brunt of various forms of violence, including conflict-related atrocities, domestic abuse, and sexual assault. Today, as we celebrate the resilience and strength of women, it is imperative that we highlight the plight of those who suffer in silence and demand swift and effective action to address crime against women in Manipur.
The protracted conflict in Manipur has exacerbated the vulnerability of women to various forms of violence. Caught in the crossfire of armed conflict, women endure unimaginable hardships, including displacement, loss of livelihoods, and the trauma of witnessing or experiencing violence firsthand. Moreover, the breakdown of social and institutional structures in conflict-affected areas has increased the vulnerability of women.
In addition to the violence perpetrated by armed groups, women in Manipur also face significant threats within their own homes and communities, fueled by entrenched patriarchal norms and impunity for perpetrators. The lack of access to justice and support services further compounds the suffering of survivors, leaving them trapped in cycles of abuse and marginalization.
Amidst these challenges, urgent action is needed to address crime against women in Manipur and ensure their safety and well-being. First and foremost, there must be a concerted effort to end the culture of impunity surrounding crimes against women. Perpetrators must be held accountable for their actions, regardless of their affiliation to this or that community or their status in the community. One stance taken by many Manipuri women, including Meitei women, which many have found commendable even though it should have been the norm, is the condemnation of the unfortunate incident depicted in the viral video. However, such issues did not get much attention given the fog of war.
Furthermore, efforts to promote peace and reconciliation must prioritize the inclusion and participation of women. Women have a vital role to play in building sustainable peace and addressing the root causes of conflict, as history has taught us about the conflicts in Manipur. Their voices must be heard, and their rights respected in all peace processes and negotiations if efforts to promote peace and reconciliation materialize.
Additionally, there is an urgent need to strengthen support services for survivors of violence and ensure their access to medical, psychosocial, and legal assistance. This includes the establishment of safe spaces and counseling services tailored to the specific needs of women affected by conflict and violence. Education and awareness-raising are also critical components of efforts to combat crime against women in Manipur. By promoting gender-sensitive education and challenging harmful stereotypes and norms, we can empower women and girls to assert their rights and resist violence and discrimination.
As we celebrate International Women’s Day, let us renew our commitment to ending violence against women in Manipur. Together, we can create a future where women are free from fear and oppression, and where their rights and dignity are upheld and respected. For this action, protests and resistance are necessary and not mere rhetoric.
