The long-standing controversy over the ownership of Manipur’s oldest regional political party, the Manipur People’s Party (MPP), has come to an end with the party conducting its Presidential Election today at GM Hall, Imphal.
The election had been pending for an extended period due to a legal dispute between two factions of the party. Following a recent directive from the Manipur High Court issued on May 13, which authorized the State Returning Officer to facilitate the party’s presidential election, the process was finally conducted today under the supervision of the MPP’s General Conference Management Committee.
Speaking to reporters, MPP General Secretary (In-charge), Dr. K. Muktasana Meitei, stated that the party could not hold the presidential election earlier because the matter was sub judice. Now that the High Court has resolved the issue, the election is being conducted formally to strengthen the party’s internal structure.
Dr. Muktasana further informed that the event held today was part of the General Conference of the party, during which the Presidential Election 2025 was the main agenda. He highlighted that this marks the beginning of a new chapter for MPP, which aims to regain its political significance as a regional force.
Looking ahead to the 2027 Manipur State Assembly elections, the MPP is planning to contest in all 40 Assembly constituencies. Dr. Muktasana expressed the party’s ambition to re-emerge as a unifying regional political platform and appealed to the public to support the MPP in its efforts to revive and lead the regional political discourse in the state.
Five candidates are contesting for the post of party president. The election process is being conducted under the supervision of General Conference Management Committee Chairman Yumnam Bhim, with voting carried out by delegates and members from different MPP units across the state. Result of the election is likely to be declared at 7 pm today, source said.
