Market women condemn violence in Inner Manipur LS election

IT News
Imphal, April 20:

In the wake of recent violent incidents during Inner Manipur’s Lok Sabha election, the Khwairamband Market women have come out and advocated for peace and democratic integrity by condemning those responsible for the violence.
Recognized for their historical struggle of Manipur and its people, the market women have voiced their condemnation of the attacks and called for immediate action to prevent their recurrence. In a press conference today, speaking on behalf of the Khwairamband market women, Asem Nirmala highlighted the pivotal role women have played throughout Manipur’s history. From their participation in the Nupi Lal movement to their defense of those advocating for Manipur’s self-determination, women have stood as guardians of the community’s well-being and aspirations.
She said that these acts of violence during yesterday’s election have deeply shaken the community. One woman, who was targeted by armed assailants, drew parallels to past atrocities by Kukis, expressing fear that similar attempts to incite fear and destruction were underway. “Yesterday’s incidents were a direct affront to us,” stated the spokesperson. “We refuse to tolerate such actions, and they must not be repeated.”
Looking ahead to the repoll, the Khwairamband Market women have called upon the Meira paibi—a grassroots women’s organization—to step forward and safeguard the integrity of the electoral process. Their presence, they argue, is essential in thwarting any attempts to disrupt voting proceedings through violence or intimidation.
