The Chandel Forest Division observed World Rivers Day at Angam Memorial School, Liwachangning, Chandel district, with the theme “No Forests, No River, No Water, No Life.”
The programme, attended by students, teachers and forest staff, was led by DFO/Chandel Dr N. Munal Meitei. School principal Dr Konthang Monshang and Range Forest Officer/Chandel N. Deepa also participated.
Speaking at the event, Dr Munal said rivers are the arteries of the planet and play a vital role in sustaining life by providing water for drinking, agriculture, livestock and industries. He warned that rivers are increasingly threatened by plastic pollution and human activities, including construction and dam projects.
He said healthy river basins are essential for water security and environmental sustainability, while rivers also contribute to climate resilience and human well-being.
Dr Munal referred to a National Green Tribunal report which identified 18 rivers in Manipur, including the Nambul, as polluted. The Chakpi and Maha rivers in Chandel are also among the rivers facing pollution concerns.
He said rivers transcend geographical and social boundaries and called for collective efforts to protect them.
Urging students to become ambassadors of river conservation, Dr Munal appealed to them to avoid activities that damage forests and rivers, stressing that the protection of forests is essential for safeguarding water resources and sustaining life.
