Villagers of Leisabithol and Mullargaon have expressed strong dissatisfaction over the alleged shifting of the two villages from Sonapur Gram Panchayat to Hilghat Gram Panchayat under Jiribam District.
The issue was discussed at a joint meeting held today by the Social Welfare Club (SWC), Mullargaon, Leisabithol and Nunkhal Shaining Club, along with local residents. The meeting deliberated on the alleged change in the administrative jurisdiction of the two villages and discussed possible steps to address the matter.
Speaking after the meeting, Administrative Chairman of Sonapur Gram Panchayat, Faij Ahmed, said that Polling Station No. 40/19 (Aglapur) and Polling Station No. 40/28 (Leisabithol and Mullargaon) were earlier under Sonapur Gram Panchayat.
He stated that although the front page of the 2024 electoral roll mentioned Hilghat Gram Panchayat instead of Sonapur Gram Panchayat, the villages continued to be reflected under Sonapur Gram Panchayat in the official system.
According to Faij Ahmed, local clubs and residents subsequently submitted applications to the Electoral Registration Officer (ERO), Jiribam, seeking clarification and correction of the matter. He said the ERO initially assured the applicants that the mention of Hilghat Gram Panchayat was a printing error.
However, despite repeated applications to the concerned authorities in Jiribam District, the issue has reportedly remained unresolved.
Faij Ahmed also questioned how the two villages could be shifted from Sonapur Gram Panchayat to Hilghat Gram Panchayat without any formal delimitation order.
He appealed to the concerned authorities to examine the matter and rectify the alleged jurisdictional error at the earliest in the interest of the residents of Leisabithol and Mullargaon.
