COPMeV, Moreh IDPs back NRC agitations before Census

The Committee on Protection of Meetei Victims (COPMeV), Moreh, along with internally displaced persons (IDPs) from Moreh, has extended support to the agitation programmes of the Just and Fair Delimitation (JFD) and 14 civil society organisations (CSOs) demanding updation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Manipur before the Census.

COPMeV said it and the displaced people from Moreh would participate in and support all programmes launched by the JFD and the 14 CSOs for early implementation of the NRC.

The organisation claimed that the presence of illegal immigrants could alter Manipur’s demographic profile and affect the indigenous population, stressing that updating the NRC and identifying illegal immigrants were necessary.

COPMeV also urged the State Government to raise the plight of IDPs living in relief camps during the ongoing Assembly session and facilitate their return and rehabilitation.

It further called for a comprehensive assessment of losses suffered during the conflict and an appropriate compensation Bill or policy based on the findings.

The organisation appealed to the State and Central Governments to issue a Gazette notification for implementation of the NRC in Manipur and facilitate its approval by the State Assembly, calling for the process to begin at the earliest.
