Fresh Violence in Taphou and nearby areas in Senapati district of Manipur has resulted in an injury to a CRPF personnel and burning of several houses, thus causing tension between the Naga and Kuki communities as well as blocking traffic on the National Highway-2.
The violence started early morning when a house in Taphou Kuki was reportedly set on fire. One more house belonging to a Poumai Naga resident in Lai village was reportedly demolished, and a third house of a resident of Phuba village was reportedly burnt down.
According to the reports of the officials, CRPF Sub-Inspector (GD) Pradeep Singh from 36th Battalion received an injury to his left foot due to firing around 10 am. He has been taken to Senapati District Hospital for treatment. The exact reasons for firing were not known.
There was firing around 9.20 am, when journalists were reporting the incidents in the region. It was claimed that there were attacks on Naga settlements in the area, but the information was not confirmed.
In addition, National Highway-2 was reportedly blocked near the headquarters of Senapati due to the activities of Naga volunteers who burnt tyres and debris and disrupted the traffic on the highway between Imphal and Dimapur.
Taphou Kuki Village Authority has strongly condemned the burning of a Kuki-owned house as “deplorable, inhuman and unacceptable” and asked those behind it to appear before them within 24 hours to solve the issue according to the custom of Kuki community.
Security forces have been deployed in Taphou and nearby areas in Senapati and Kangpokpi districts to avoid the spreading of the tension.
