The National People’s Women Front (NPWF), Manipur State Unit, has submitted two separate representations to Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam, seeking urgent government intervention over the burning of six abandoned Meitei houses at Kanto Sabal and the need to upgrade Litan Police Station in Ukhrul district.
In its first representation, NPWF expressed concern over the torching of six houses belonging to displaced Meitei families at Kanto Sabal near Leimakhong on July 11, stating that the incident has heightened tensions along the Imphal West-Kangpokpi border.
A team of the NPWF, led by its State President Nonibala Sapam, visited the affected site and later met the displaced families staying at the Khurkhul Mandop Relief Camp. During the visit, the team interacted with the camp coordinator, R.K. Sanahal, and the affected families, who reportedly expressed deep emotional distress and said the incident had further diminished their confidence in returning to their native village.
The organisation urged the government to conduct a fair, impartial and time-bound investigation into the incident, identify those responsible and initiate strict legal action. It also called for enhanced security in and around Kanto Sabal, deployment of adequate security personnel in vulnerable areas, compensation for the affected families, protection of abandoned properties belonging to displaced persons, and measures to facilitate their safe and dignified return.
In a separate representation, the NPWF sought the immediate upgradation of Litan Police Station, stating that the police station requires improved infrastructure, additional manpower and operational support to effectively maintain law and order in the sensitive border area.
The organisation observed that a well-equipped police station is essential for preventing escalation of violence, ensuring prompt emergency response and strengthening public confidence irrespective of community or ethnicity.
Copies of both representations were also submitted to the Chief Advisor to the Government of Manipur, the Director General of Police, Manipur, and the Superintendent of Police, Ukhrul. The representations were signed by Nonibala Sapam, President of the NPWF, Manipur State Unit.
