A massive joint search operation has been launched in Manipur’s Ukhrul district to track down those responsible for the deadly ambush that claimed the lives of two Assam Rifles personnel earlier this week.
The coordinated operation, involving the Assam Rifles, Border Security Force (BSF) and Manipur Police, commenced on Friday in the Nungshang area, days after suspected militants attacked an Assam Rifles convoy at Nungshong Khong under Ukhrul Police Station on July 6.
The ambush claimed the lives of Warrant Officer Balwant Singh and Havildar C.M. Singh, while another soldier sustained injuries.
According to the Assam Rifles, joint security teams are conducting intensive combing and area domination operations across residential settlements, vulnerable routes and dense forest areas in an effort to locate the perpetrators. The operation also aims to recover concealed arms and ammunition, dismantle militant infrastructure and prevent further attacks on security personnel and civilians.
In a statement shared on its official X handle, the Assam Rifles said the operation reflects the unwavering commitment of the security forces to restore peace and normalcy, maintain law and order, and ensure that those responsible for the ambush are brought to justice. The force added that every effort is being made to safeguard the lives and security of local residents while the search operation is underway.
Security has been reinforced across the district, with additional personnel deployed at strategic locations and vehicle checks intensified along key routes. Authorities are maintaining close surveillance in sensitive areas to prevent the movement of armed groups and avert any further escalation.
