Agriculture and technology must drive Manipur’s future: Joychandra

Chairman of the Justice Committee on Anglo-Manipuri War, 1891 Martyrs and Freedom Fighters of Kangleipak (Manipur), Joychandra Konthoujam, has called for greater investment in agriculture, adoption of modern technology and collective efforts towards achieving food self-sufficiency in Manipur.

He was speaking as the chief guest at a Farmer Training-cum-Machinery and Seed Distribution Programme held at Thayong Kom Village under Lamlai Assembly Constituency on Tuesday. The programme was jointly organised by the Department of Agriculture and Kom Union Manipur.

In his address, Joychandra Konthoujam observed that developed countries have achieved progress through hard work, productivity and efficient utilisation of available resources. He said sustainable development can only be achieved through consistent effort and dedication, adding that food security remains a key foundation for economic growth.

He urged all communities in the state to work together to transform unused and underutilised areas into productive agricultural and horticultural zones. According to him, expanding cultivation and encouraging agricultural entrepreneurship would help create a self-reliant economy while generating employment opportunities for the youth.

The chief guest also stressed the importance of adopting modern technologies and environmentally friendly farming practices. He encouraged young people, particularly those living in hill areas, to take up agriculture and horticulture on a larger scale, stating that such initiatives would contribute to environmental conservation while boosting food production.

Appealing for unity among all communities, Joychandra said collective efforts towards development and sustainable agriculture would pave the way for a peaceful, prosperous and self-sufficient Manipur.

The programme was presided over by Kom Union Manipur President Serto Ahao Kom. District Agriculture Officer, Imphal East, Ph. Premila Devi, and Seed Analyst and Nodal Officer of MOVCD-NER, Kh. Nimaichand Singh, attended as guests of honour.

During the programme, farmers were provided with agricultural machinery and inputs, including rice mills, spray pumps and seeds, free of cost.
