The function was attended by Sunil Elangbam as the Chief Guest, PH Chandrakumar Singh as the Guest of Honour, and Soibam Inakhunba Singh, who presided over the programme.
A highlight of the celebration was the felicitation of Dr. K. Romeo Meetei, National Adventure Awardee and International Judge, in recognition of his significant contributions to the promotion and development of adventure sports and sport climbing in Manipur and across the country.
Addressing the gathering, Sunil Elangbam commended MASCA for its sustained efforts in popularising sport climbing over the past decade. He praised the association’s role in nurturing young talent and producing athletes capable of representing Manipur and India at national and international competitions. He also assured support and cooperation for the association’s future initiatives, particularly in the areas of infrastructure development, athlete training and promotion of the sport.
As part of the celebration, a one-day sport climbing training programme was organised for school and college students. Around 200 students participated in the programme, reflecting the growing interest in the discipline among the youth.
Speaking during the programme, Dr. Romeo Meetei traced the history and growth of sport climbing at the international, national and state levels. He highlighted the sport’s rapid development following its inclusion in the Olympic movement and noted the immense potential of Manipuri athletes in the discipline.
Dr. Romeo also appealed to the Manipur Government to establish an international-standard climbing wall at Khuman Lampak Sports Complex to provide world-class training facilities for aspiring climbers. He pointed out that Manipur climber Maibam Chingkhei, a member of the Indian team, has already qualified for the upcoming Asian Games, bringing recognition to the state.
The celebration concluded with participants reaffirming their commitment to the growth of sport climbing and expressing confidence that Manipur can emerge as a leading centre for the sport in India.
