World No Tobacco Day observed

Despite sustained efforts by civil society organisations and women’s groups to curb the use of drugs and alcohol, tobacco consumption continues to remain widespread, contributing to various serious health problems, Director of Health Services, Manipur, Dr. N. Hemantakumar said on the occasion of World No Tobacco Day.
He was speaking at a programme jointly organised by the Directorate of Health Services, State Health Society, National Health Mission (NHM) Manipur and the Indian Medical Association (IMA), Manipur State Branch, at the IMA Hall on Saturday.
The event was held under the theme “Unmasking the Appeal: Countering Nicotine and Tobacco Addiction.”
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Hemantakumar said it is well known that tobacco use adversely affects almost every organ of the human body. He noted that the long-standing culture of tobacco consumption in society has contributed significantly to the growing incidence of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) among elderly people.
He further stated that the harmful effects of smoking are not limited to active smokers alone. Individuals exposed to second-hand smoke over prolonged periods are also vulnerable to serious health complications, particularly those above the age of 60.
Dr. Hemantakumar pointed out that several non-communicable diseases, including hypertension, heart attacks, diabetes, cancer and high cholesterol, are closely linked to tobacco consumption. He stressed that addiction is not merely a habit but a disease affecting the brain. According to him, tobacco products alter the brain’s reward system, making it difficult for users to quit even when they are fully aware of the harmful consequences.
He said quitting tobacco suddenly can be challenging and often requires proper guidance, counselling and support. He therefore urged tobacco users to seek professional assistance and adopt appropriate measures to overcome addiction.
The programme was also attended by NHM Manipur State Mission Director Dr. M. Dinesh, Director of Family Welfare Services Dr. N. Bino, IMA Manipur State Branch President Dr. Simpson Sareo and IMA Secretary Dr. Ak. Ibohal, among other officials and medical professionals.
