Congress leaders on Sunday questioned the handling of the ongoing Manipur crisis by both the State and Central governments during a function held at Patsoi Part-1 Awang, where Lok Sabha MP Angomcha Bimol Akoijam inaugurated a newly constructed Multipurpose Community Hall.
The programme, organised by the Construction Committee of the hall, was attended by Khundrakpam MLA Thokchom Lokeshwor, former Patsoi MLA A.K. Mirabai and Committee president L. Dineshwor Moirang. A two-minute silence was observed in memory of those who lost their lives in the violence that began on May 3, 2023.
Addressing the gathering, Angomcha Bimol Akoijam stated that the prolonged violence had caused deep suffering and said there was a need to clearly understand the reasons behind the crisis. He observed that efforts to resolve the conflict had not produced meaningful outcomes and alleged that the response of the authorities lacked seriousness. He also raised concerns over the protection of citizens’ rights and the functioning of governance mechanisms in the state.
Former MLA A.K. Mirabai stated that the continuing unrest had led to widespread public concern over both its causes and handling. She called for greater responsibility among political leaders to restore normalcy and stressed that public representatives must prioritise the welfare of the people. She also noted that development funds were meant for the benefit of the entire constituency and should be utilised accordingly.
MLA Thokchom Lokeshwor, speaking at the event, expressed concern over the hardships faced by the people and questioned the effectiveness of measures taken to address the crisis. He stated that the situation had exposed gaps in governance and called for coordinated efforts by both ruling and opposition parties to restore peace.
He further raised concerns over restrictions along National Highways, stating that disruptions were affecting connectivity and daily life. He cautioned that continued inaction could lead to increasing public discontent.
